i think learning about juneteenth early in elementary school was one of my primary reasons for growing up thinking racism was a thing of the past. we were celebrating the emancipation and in turn, racial equality! of course people don’t judge other people (and enslave them) based on the color of their skin, that’s ridiculous!
then i, a little brown girl from texas, turned 9 and found out racism is totally still around and sucks and americans needed to evolve more to believe in equality.
and now i’m about to turn 25 and we have a black man who might be president and i’m once again excited for where our nation is going but i’m also nervous that maybe america is not yet evolved as as i think it to be. we’ll see.
