this has been my argument for years. marriage should never be a legal issue - it’s personal and sometimes religious; civil unions are a state issue because they can affect taxes and legal rights.

just because ‘marriage’ is the thing we’ve been calling it all these years doesn’t mean we need to continue on that path.
